Re: 5 favorites from 77 |
A favorite topic. Best year ever. 5 is tough. But I'm surprised at least one person hasn't mentioned #3 on this list (in orderof preference).
1. 10/29/77 (Also my vote for Best Show Ever) Here's my review/reason why if anyone cares:
http://www.archive.org/details/gd1977-10-29.sbd.miller.92085.sbeok.flac162. 4/23/77 (ridiculous set list and pure power playing. You get a ripping Scarlet>Fire PLUS a Help>Slip>Franks and so much more.)
3. 6/9/77
You could really take any 3 from this Winterland run from 6/7 to 6/9 but this one wins by a nose.
4. 5/9/77
Besides what might be the best Help>Slip>Franks outside of the "One From the Vault" performance there are so many underrated gems from this show, including a stellar "Brown Eyed Women", what might be the best "Ship of Fools" ever, and just a gorgeous "Comes a Time."
5. 5/13/77
Dark horse pick here. So easy to overlook given the perfect month of May '77 shows, but this one shines with a picture perfect Scarlet>Fire --short transition jam but a kick-ass 'Fire' w/Jerry golden on the wah-wah--and all the precision in sets 1 and 2 that made '77 so beautiful. Also look for a killer "Samson" with Bobby telling the audience just before it starts that Mickey says "the first rule of Rock and Roll is drummers don't make house calls."
